Dr. Kevin Christie

Experienced Circumcision Doctor – Dr. Kevin Christie

Dr. Kevin Christie is a well known and respected Family Doctor with both a private practice and hospital affiliations. He performs Pollock Technique™ circumcisions at his Gentle Procedures Clinic in Fredericton as a primary focus of his medical practice.

Dr. Christie has chosen to focus his clinic on circumcision and vasectomy.

After extensive research on circumcision procedures in use today, Dr. Christie chose to have extensive training with Dr. Neil Pollock, one of North America’s foremost authorities on baby, child and adult circumcision.

Dr. Pollock’s research into developing a safe, quick and virtually pain free approach to circumcision has been widely recognized in North America. Dr. Christie is the first physician to introduce Dr. Pollock’s techniques to the Maritime provinces, and his clinic has grown enormously as a result. Parents are relieved to have a virtually pain-free option for the circumcision of their baby boys, and men of all ages can benefit from the Pollock Technique™ .

At Gentle Procedures Clinic, we want to create a comfortable atmosphere. We pride ourselves in providing a unique, personal service for families coming in for an infant circumcision.

After the circumcision, Dr. Christie will follow up to check up on your baby’s progress and to answer any questions that the parents may have.

A follow-up appointment and printed aftercare instructions will be given to families as part of our professional service.

The Circumcision Experience at our Centre

We believe that there is nothing better for ensuring a baby’s comfort than the presence of a parent. Your baby is always with you, and you are welcome and encouraged to be in the private room during the procedure. Parents are never asked to wait in another room while the circumcision is being done. Soft music is played creating a calm, relaxing environment for your baby.

Babies, if they remain awake during the procedure, are soothed by a pacifier made up of natural ingredients. At Gentle Procedures, it is not uncommon for babies to sleep right through their circumcision. We really are gentle.

We recognize that warmth is part of a comfortable environment for your baby. The procedure room will be kept warm and is equipped with a local thermostat so that each family can create the right temperature for their baby.

Each year, there are over a million circumcisions performed in North America. Newborn circumcision, when performed properly, is quick and safe. The medical benefits accrue from infancy through old age.

It is Dr. Christie’s position (as well as the position of the Canadian Pediatric Society) that; “When parents are making a decision about circumcision they should be advised of the present state of medical knowledge about its benefits and harms. Their decision may ultimately be based on personal, religious or cultural factors”.

In 2012, The American Academy of Pediatrics published in a Policy Statement that; “current evidence indicates that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks”. For more information on the risks and benefits of circumcision, please click here.

Why do doctors recommend our clinic for circumcision?

Dr. Christie uses the Pollock Technique™, a quick and virtually painless procedure pioneered by Dr. Neil Pollock and safely performed in over 50,000 circumcision surgeries.

Our procedure takes only a minute (10 times quicker than most hospital circumcisions). We use extensive pain control methods including Tylenol, a sugar solution (with infants – to reduce pain perception), a topical freezing cream, and a local anesthetic injection (both short- and long-acting).

There are low complication rates.

For your peace of mind, Dr. Christie is available 24 hours a day on his personal cell phone. All families are given his contact information if any concerns should arise so they can reach the doctor directly at any hour.

When boys are not circumcised it may be to continue a family practice or simply because the procedure is regarded as unnecessary.

Parent’s reasons can include:

  • They are concerned that they may be doing a procedure on an otherwise healthy baby that may cause pain or complications.
  • They wonder whether their child will wish that he had not been circumcised at a later time.
  • Some parents can be less interested in following cultural and religious traditions.
  • They are unsure of the medical reasons in favor of a circumcision.

An infant circumcision is often undertaken for cultural and religious reasons, and there can be health benefits as well. In most cases the choice is ultimately made based on family and personal preference.

Potential benefits of circumcision include:

  • It reduces the risk of urinary tract infection.
  • It reduces the risk of penile infection also called balanoposthitis.
  • It eliminates the need to do it later in life when up to 6% of boys will require a circumcision because of various problems. (When it is done later in life, it is a more costly, difficult, and riskier procedure that entails a longer and more painful recovery period).
  • It reduces the risk of getting some sexually transmitted diseases including Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and AIDS (HIV).
  • It reduces the risk of penile cancer and cervical cancer in partners.
  • Circumcised men have less risk of sexual dysfunction later in life.

Key Questions About Infant Male Circumcision

Parents sometimes ask about why circumcision should be done, and what type of circumcision is best. On these questions we can answer that the decision on why to circumcise is a personal one that will be made within your family based on your traditions and values. There are some potential health benefits to male infant circumcision and there are also reasons not to circumcise baby boys. Our recommendation is that you make an informed a decision as possible, and the answer to the question of why to circumcise that you come to will be unique to you and your family. Circumcision is prescribed by both Judaism and Islam, and many Christians and people of other religious backgrounds also choose circumcision for health and cosmetic reasons, or to continue family tradition. Many Canadian men are circumcised, as infant circumcision was routinely done on a majority of male babies in the 1970’s for health reasons. Data from www.circinfo.net

There are different circumcision techniques practiced by different doctors but the main “circumcision types” are simply circumcised and uncircumcised. We are occasionally asked about a “tight circumcision” or a “low circumcision”, but our method is designed to give the same result in all cases and we do not offer a choice of different circumcision types – and we apply our method in all cases except where a patient may present with a unique situation requiring a unique approach.

While all circumcision methods generally seek a similar result, at Gentle Procedures Clinics we use the Pollock Technique™. This method minimizes pain for the infant via application of multiple modalities to reduce it, including:

  • Infant Tylenol before the procedure
  • Numbing cream applied before the anaesthetic injection
  • A dorsal penile block (a freezing injection) that removes all feeling from the penis
  • A sugar pacifier to keep the baby distracted
  • Post-circumcision follow-up to quickly spot any issues.

Additionally, our doctor also controls environmental factors in the procedure room to maximize the patient’s comfort.

We maintain the temperature at a warm and comfortable level and may play music to help provide a calm ambiance during the brief operation.
